From its first junior program in 1953, WRSC has a long and successful history with young sailors - giving some of the best sailors in the country their start. Our instructors instill not only a respect for the water, but also teach the techniques and skills required to sustain a life-long passion for the sport while always keeping at the forefront the most important element of teaching young children – FUN!
Our summer program runs from mid-June through mid-August, Monday through Friday. Our students will not only learn through repetitive drills but also through creative ways such as an Adventure Sail, an inquisitive Treasure Hunt, a game of Jeopardy on a stormy day, and through so many other creative ways. Each session culminates with a special activity that will use all the skills that they have learned whether it be it a sail to High Island in the Rhode River for lunch or a quiet picnic to Round Bay to observe the horseshoe crabs hatching their young.
Our High School sailing program sails from start of school to November, starting back up in March ending in May. This is the newest addition to our education programs at WRSC and are excited to see it grow! No experience needed, come tryout and see if it's for you!
COVID-19 OPERATING POLICIES
WRSC is proud to be one of the only member-volunteer operated sailing club operating during these times, it is all thanks to our dedicated community founded in the love of sailing. We have two main policy documents that guide the club and its activities through these times, the WRSC Covid-19 Safety Plan and Guidelines document and the WRSC Education Covid-19 Plan document.
IT IS OUR GOAL TO PRODUCE LIFELONG SAILORS WHO TRULY ENJOY THE SPORT!
We offer four sessions each summer for all ages 5-18, from Sea Urchins to Optis, 420 and Lasers. Each two week session will cover the appropriate skills for each student’s level, and builds on the skills for those students returning for more than one session
Sailors are also given the opportunity to participate in summer regattas around the Bay with our Racing Team. They can participate for a full season or just partake in one. And they don’t have to start out as racers. Anyone with the desire will be given a chance to see what racing is all about. Parents of sailors participating in summer regattas will be asked to assist in some regatta transportation.
HIGH SCHOOL SAILING
We welcome sailors of all skill levels to join the high school sailing program at WRSC. Right now, only the Southern High Bulldogs' call us home but we are willing to host any other area schools in our growing program. If your school does not have a team, come join us too!
