New This Year
-
Fleet Exploration: This summer lines up in such a way that it leaves us with an extra week after the Oxford Regatta. We have decided that this is a great time for our racers to wind down and check out what else there is out there for them - whether it’s other dinghies like the Albacores, 5O5s, 29ers, Melges 15s, or maybe something larger and more high performance like a VX1 or a catamaran, maybe even some big boat sailing/racing?
-
29er Clinics: 3 days - Friday Evening, Saturday & Sunday and will be held once a month, May thru August. For more details, please check out our Clinic and Off-Season Program Page.
-
High School Sailing Jump Start: A week long program at the end of the summer designed for 7th to 12th grade sailors new to High School Sailing or those that just want to get a jump on the Fall season. For more details, please check out our Clinic and Off-Season Program Page.
The WRSC Junior Race Team offers sailors the chance to explore racing throughout the summer. Whether joining for the full season or just part, any sailor with the desire to race will be supported and encouraged.
Who Can Join
Racing is a natural next step for junior sailors who have completed two or more sessions (a guideline, not a requirement), are confident in boat handling, and want to start competing against their peers. Racers remain part of the Junior Sailing School community and practice during the same hours which works out great for families and especially our younger racers.
Sessions
WRSC Jr. Race Team sessions align with the racing schedule to optimize training and regatta time. If the sessions do not fit your summer calendar or you have non-racing siblings to consider, please contact the Director for a personalized plan. Although not ideal, you also have the option to sign up for any regular summer sailing school session and choose 'racer' during registration.
-
Race Session A: Kicks off the season with intensive training and regatta schedule including Annapolis Jr Race Week, Maryland State Champs, and some optional Virginia travel events.
-
Race Session B: Builds on the lessons learned from Session A with some traveling the second week to RHYC and possibly Lewes, DE for that unique sailing experience of sailing off a beach on the ocean.
-
Race Session C: End the summer with events at MRYC and the Oxford Regatta which is always a great family event and fan favorite
-
Race Session Ox: For those that did earlier sessions and would like to just come back for the last week of racing - MRYC and Oxford Regatta.
-
Race Fleet Exploration: A week of exploring other racing fleets and opportunities - Participation in one of the above Sessions or permission from the Director is required.
-
Full Summer 7 Week Program: Incorporates session A, B, and C.
-
Full Summer 8 Week Program w/RFE: Includes all Race sessions and the Race Fleet Exploration Week
Equipment
Registration includes use of one of our boats, sails, and a dolly. Sailors are assigned equipment on Day 1 and taught how to properly care for their equipment. Personally owned boats are welcomed and encouraged especially for our more competitive sailors. The purchasing of one’s own sails can also provide a competitive edge without the cost of boat ownership. Discount for using your own boat.
Regattas
Race Team sessions align with the summer regatta schedule. Coaching is included for weekday events and the Oxford Annual Regatta. Parental volunteers are a necessity. Details on volunteer needs, travel, and additional costs are provided in the Parent Handbook. The full schedule is listed below.
Please contact the Director with any questions or special programming needs at education@westriversc.com.
If you are in need of extended care services for our summer program,
we should be able to assist you with that.
Please contact the Director at education @ westriversc.com.
