Summer program
Set sail into summer at West River Sailing School, where children ages 4.5–18 can discover the thrill of life on the water. Nestled along the calm, traffic‑free West River, our school provides a safe and scenic setting that’s ideal for learning, exploring, and growing.
Since 1954, we’ve been inspiring young sailors with programs that combine skill‑building and personal growth. Our experienced instructors guide students through hands-on lessons in everything from basic boat handling and navigation to reading wind patterns and mastering advanced race‑course strategy. Whether your child is stepping aboard for the first time or gearing up for their next regatta, our curriculum meets them at their level.
Learning here goes far beyond the fundamentals. We spark curiosity and teamwork through a mix of classic and creative activities, while instilling respect for teammates, equipment, and the environment. And above all, safety comes first. With small group instruction and a supportive atmosphere, every sailor can progress at their own pace and build confidence on the water.
This summer, give your child more than just sailing lessons - give them an unforgettable adventure filled with friendship, discovery, and the joy of sailing
If you are in need of extended care services for our summer program,
we should be able to assist with that.

SEA URCHINS (4.5-8)
The Sea Urchin program is designed for children ages 4.5 to 8, offering a welcoming introduction to the world of sailing. Our goal is to help young sailors feel comfortable on the water while learning in a playful environment that builds confidence and enjoyment through arts and crafts, games, and time afloat. Along the way, they’ll begin to discover the parts of the boat and essential sailing vocabulary, laying the foundation for a lifetime of adventures. To support our unique hands-on approach - with instructors and trained peer mentors right there in the water alongside the children - we keep groups small. Typically, there are three or less students per instructor or mentor, ensuring every child receives plenty of guidance and encouragement.

SAILING SCHOOL (8-18)
These courses cater to sailors of all skill levels who have completed second grade. Each two-week session is designed to cover the appropriate skills for each student's level, with continuous skill development for those returning for additional sessions. We utilize OPTIs, 420s, and Lasers in our program. If you require a one-week or special programming, please contact the director.

RACE TEAM
The Race Team is a natural progression for sailors comfortable with basic boat handling skills and eager to learn more about sailing and competing. They will practice advanced boat handling techniques, starting strategies, and mark-roundings, while also learning tactics, strategy, and racing rules. The team competes at various regattas around the Chesapeake Bay, with participants required to attend at least one session. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to experience racing if they have the competitive desire. Therefore, registration fees include the charter of a boat, sail(s), and dolly; however, personally owned sails and/or boats are encouraged for serious racers. Additionally, we offer the option for visiting sailors looking for single regatta coaching.
